The medina's first guesthouse, opened in 1946 at Bab Doukkala, La Maison Arabe is an institution two steps from Jemaa el-Fna. Twenty-six rooms and suites around patios, a cookery school known well beyond the city, a spa and a piano bar. The large pool sits elsewhere: at the country club in the Palmeraie.

Our verdict

La Maison Arabe is not a medina hotel like the others: it is one of the oldest Marrakech addresses opened to travellers. It all starts in 1946, when two French women open here the first old-town restaurant accessible to foreigners. The table becomes a reference, hosts crowned heads, then closes. In 1997, the place is reborn as a guesthouse - the first in the city - and launches its cookery school right after. So you sleep in a piece of local history, at Bab Doukkala, the northern medina quarter, ten minutes on foot from Jemaa el-Fna through the derbs.

The house holds twenty-six rooms and suites arranged around planted patios, in a plainly Moroccan register: painted ceilings, coloured stained glass, tadelakt and zellige, fireplace in some rooms. The core of the experience remains the kitchen. The Maison Arabe workshop built its reputation well beyond Marrakech: you learn tagine, pastilla and pastries with a dada, in a group lesson in a fitted kitchen or a private class. Add a spa with traditional hammam, the Trois Saveurs restaurant and a piano bar with live music in the evening, rare in the medina. For anyone after a character address where wellness counts as much as the decor, the house plays in the same court as other great addresses of the city built around the hammam.

One point to know before booking, and it weighs by the season. The main pool is not on site: it sits at the house’s country club, in the Palmeraie, fifteen minutes by road, served by a free shuttle. There is a basin in the hotel garden, but anyone coming to chain lengths in the sun will need to plan the trip, or give up the large pool. Access to the derb follows the medina rule: you arrive by taxi at the mouth of the lane, then finish on foot, bags included. On the price side, reckon from around £170 a night depending on the season, and more for the suites. This is an address for anyone wanting to sit inside the medina, cook Moroccan and sleep in a real period riad - less for someone dreaming first of a resort and a pool at the room’s foot. Rating of 9.3 on Booking for 679 reviews, with location and service on top.

What sets it apart

  • The cookery school The workshop that made the house known: you learn tagine and pastilla with a dada, in a group or private lesson. One of the best-known cookery schools in Marrakech.
  • An institution since 1946 First medina restaurant open to foreigners, turned into a guesthouse in 1997 - the first in the city. Nearly eighty years of history in these walls.
  • The piano bar A hushed bar with live music in the evening, rare in the medina. You take a drink here without being a hotel guest, after a day in the souks.
  • The spa and hammam Treatments, scrub and traditional hammam on site, off the noise of the derbs. Enough to chain a morning of walking and a calm afternoon.

Worth knowing

The hotel sits in a derb of Bab Doukkala, about ten minutes on foot from Jemaa el-Fna. Access is on foot or by taxi to the mouth of the derb, not by car to the door. The large pool sits at the country club in the Palmeraie, fifteen minutes by road, served by a free shuttle. Heated pool and spa on site. Private parking for a fee. Buffet breakfast. Check-in from 2pm, check-out by noon.
