Rooftops in Marrakech: our 2026 pick

The view has a price and the plate rarely keeps up. In the medina, most rooftops do not serve alcohol - we say which ones are licensed, which ones actually cook and when the light earns the trip. Twelve addresses checked in July 2026, from the observation café to the licensed Kasbah rooftop-restaurant.

In Marrakech, a rooftop is set apart less by its view than by what the medina bans and what the card holds. Nearly every rooftop in the medina does not serve alcohol - the licence is rare and jealously kept. On the other side, a handful of licensed addresses sketch out the sunset cocktail circuit, from Café Arabe to Kabana. Then come the tables that stake it all on the view, and the ones - fewer - where the plate leads the light. We picked twelve rooftops, all open in July 2026, without the hotel rooftops kept for guests only. Each is dated to the month we last passed by: the scene shifts fast, the card faster.

The alcohol map in the medina

Marrakech medina lives under an exceptions licence. The municipality hands out few, and the riad-restaurants that hold one often say so: it is an asset, not a given. Seven rooftops on our pick are licensed inside the medina walls - Café Arabe, El Fenn, Le Foundouk, Kabana, DarDar, Le Trou au Mur and Terrasse des Épices. Odette Bar in the Kasbah and MÖ-MÖ add two spots. Three addresses own the ‘dry + mocktails’ stance: Nomad (whose licence was not renewed), L’mida (claimed positioning, signature mocktails) and Café des Épices (observation café, not licensed restaurant). No alcohol does not predict the plate: L’mida cooks better than most of its licensed neighbours.

To get why the alcohol map looks like this in the medina - the Moroccan legal framework, the municipal licence regime, what a ‘dry rooftop’ means on the card and the mocktails worth the trip - our note Alcohol in Marrakech, the honest picture unpacks the context this pick guide cannot compress into a word.

Our pick, by intent

Three uses, three logics. We keep them apart, because a rooftop where you take a sunset cocktail is not the one where you choose to dine.

For a sunset cocktail

Six licensed addresses where the view is the main contract - the card sometimes holds, more rarely all the way. Café Arabe (rue Mouassine) stays the historic route to a Koutoubia view with a glass: the house has served wine for over twenty years, the Italian card wavers, keep the glass. El Fenn (rue Lalla Fatima Zahra, Bab El Ksour) holds the most polished hotel rooftop in the medina: you go for the bar (no booking, a sunset cocktail, no commitment) - the restaurant asks 250 to 300 MAD per head for tapas found better elsewhere. Kabana (rue Fatima Zahra R’mila) is an Ibiza-style rooftop-club: cocktails 120-150 MAD, DJ in the evening, mood festive more than gastronomic - the aperitif more than the card. DarDar (Riad Zitoun Kedim, south side of the medina) offers the best light-to-crowd ratio at sunset, because it sits outside the Mouassine and Rahba loops. Terrasse des Épices (souk Cherifia) has been running since 2007: the evening scene with DJ still holds better than the card. MÖ-MÖ climbs the ranking in 2026 with its 270° view over the medina and Atlas. No booking possible - arrive 45 minutes before sunset in high season.

For the plate before the view

Four addresses where the table earns the trip. Le Trou au Mur (Derb el Farnatchi, Ferblantiers area) is our editorial mark: it is the only medina address that pushes the forgotten Moroccan cooking - tride, m’rouzia, tanjia to order the day before, mechoui in the clay oven. Fair view, plate above it (dishes 150-210 MAD, licensed). Book the rooftop table 24 hrs in advance, more at the weekend. Le Foundouk (souk Hal Fes, Kaat Bennahid) opens only in the evening: no sunset light to expect, a Moroccan dinner in the fine-dining register, closed Wednesdays, tasting menus around 450-550 MAD per 2025 reviews. L’mida holds the best ‘dry + plate’ balance in the medina: careful Moroccan fusion cooking, signature mocktails (Marrakech Pacho, L’mida), Koutoubia and Atlas view from 65 seats. Very often full: book. La Sultana Odette Bar (rue de la Kasbah) is the only real Kasbah rooftop on the pick: Saadian Tombs view, licensed, formal mood after 6pm. The house’s hotel restaurant, La Table du Souk, is another midday rooftop whose alcohol status is less clear - we cover Odette Bar because it is the evening rooftop, licensed, open 4pm to 1am, mezze until 10pm.

For watching, not dining

Two addresses where the use is observation, not dinner. Nomad (Derb Aarjane) holds better at lunch: clearer light, less wait, the plate (dishes 110-160 MAD per 2025 reviews) reads better in the quiet. Dry and uncompromising. Café des Épices (75 Rahba Lakdima) is a three-level observation café: breakfast and salads at 50-120 MAD, 3rd-floor terrace with head-on view over the square. No alcohol, no booking, ideal in late afternoon.

What we set aside, and why

Le Kilim, often cited on online lists, is not a rooftop: it is a ground-floor terrace in Guéliz. The confusion comes from its link to Nomad and Café des Épices (same editorial group). We keep it out deliberately.

Le Salama (near Jemaa el-Fna) is an open rooftop-show - three levels, belly dance, live music, festive tourist mood. It sits in the ‘dinner with show’ logic, not a classic rooftop comparison. Covered in the dinner-show & fantasia activity sheet.

La Table du Souk at La Sultana (midday rooftop, distinct from Odette Bar): alcohol status less clear, lunch positioning. We cover Odette Bar, more readable.

Book, or push a door

Firm booking, whatever the season: Le Trou au Mur (24 hrs in advance for the rooftop table), El Fenn restaurant, La Sultana Odette for non-guests, Le Foundouk (closed Wednesdays).

Booking 24 to 48 hrs in high season, push the door out of season: Kabana (required at the weekend), DarDar, L’mida (often full), Terrasse des Épices (advised in the evening). MÖ-MÖ takes no bookings - arrive 45 minutes before sunset in high season.

No reasonable booking: Café Arabe outside high season, Café des Épices, Nomad outside high season at lunch. El Fenn Bar, no booking, at any opening hour - which is also why we suggest it as an aperitif.

In high season (April-May, September-October, European school holidays), double the booking margin everywhere, and turn up 45 minutes before sunset for the best table.

Frequently asked questions

Which medina rooftops serve alcohol?
Seven rooftops on our pick are licensed in the medina: Café Arabe, El Fenn, Le Foundouk, Kabana, DarDar, Le Trou au Mur and Terrasse des Épices. Odette Bar at the Kasbah and MÖ-MÖ round off the list. Nomad, L'mida and Café des Épices own the 'dry + mocktails' stance.
When is the best light window on the rooftop?
Rough sunset: 6.30-7.30pm in April-May, 8-8.45pm in July. Add 45 minutes if the rooftop is popular (El Fenn, MÖ-MÖ). Le Foundouk opens only in the evening: no sunset to expect there.
Can I bring children to a Marrakech rooftop?
Most sit inside riads: stairs, several flights, no lift. Café des Épices or Terrasse des Épices tolerate children during the day. Kabana and DarDar explicitly restrict young children in the evening.
Do I have to book, or can I just walk in?
Le Trou au Mur, Le Foundouk, El Fenn restaurant and La Sultana Odette require a firm booking. Kabana, DarDar and L'mida ask for 24 to 48 hrs in high season. MÖ-MÖ takes no bookings: arrive 45 minutes before sunset. Café Arabe, Café des Épices and Nomad often stay open without a booking outside high season.
Is Le Kilim in Guéliz a rooftop?
No. Despite the name cited on several online lists, Le Kilim is a ground-floor terrace in Guéliz. The confusion comes from its link to Nomad and Café des Épices (same editorial group). We have deliberately kept it out of the guide.
