Romantic restaurants in Marrakech, patios and gardens

In Marrakech, a romantic dinner rests less on the candles than on what the plate delivers. The fountain patio, the lanterns, the white napkins are everywhere - they can dress an excellent meal or camouflage a mass tourist banquet served on a conveyor belt. We look for tables where the setting AND the cooking hold up, without the three-figure bill for the decor. Six addresses checked in July 2026, from the medina patio at 300 MAD (Palais Lamrani, Al Baraka) to the chef’s dinner at 550 MAD (Riad Kniza), avoiding the gastronomic palaces (covered in our fine-dining guide) and the dinner-shows with gnaoua musicians and belly dance (activity sheet dinner-show).

The candlelit-patio trap

In Marrakech, the candlelit patio is a couple’s-guide cliché. The real trap is the candlelit-patio-plus-show: at Yacout, Dar Zellij, Le Tanjia and other big dinner-show houses, the candles are there, live gnaoua music too, belly dance at 9pm as well - and the bill climbs to 600-900 MAD per person. It is not a couple’s dinner, it is a staged tourist evening in which the table for two is diluted between a hundred covers and three acts. Real tables for two, in Marrakech, are rarer than you would think. Most boutique riad-restaurants are open only to their hotel guests (Riad Adore, Riad Farnatchi, Peacock Pavilions). The rest are either rooftops (Café Arabe, El Fenn, Le Foundouk - our rooftops guide) or gastronomic palaces (Villa des Orangers, La Grande Table Marocaine, Sesamo, Le Tobsil - our fine-dining guide). This guide focuses on what remains: six small-group addresses, open to the public, between 300 and 700 MAD per person.

Six addresses, three settings

The medina patios outside the palaces

Four medina addresses where the riad patio holds the couple’s promise without tipping into a palace. Palais Riad Lamrani - La Table du Palais (Mouassine, 63 rue Sidi El Yamani) is the least known of the six, the best kept at this price: four-part patio around a central fountain, lanterns in the evening, jazz piano rather than gnaoua musicians. Dishes from 100 MAD, three-course menu at 250 MAD, typical bill 300-450 MAD per person with wine. Card that changes weekly, closed on Wednesdays. Al Baraka (Jemaa el-Fna square, west side) is the paradox owned: an address on the liveliest square in the medina, with a 500 m² patio planted with orange trees that cuts the noise completely. Menu from 340 MAD, four rooms around the central fountain. Ask for a patio-side table, avoid the indoor rooms that lack air in summer. Riad Kniza (34 Derb l’Hôtel, Bab Doukkala) holds the small-group Moroccan table: only nine tables, fixed menu 550 MAD per person to order 24 hours in advance (the chef shops the market that same morning). Musicians at the welcome, not in the dining room. At 150 MAD less than Dar Yacout, without the musicians in the room. La Maison Arabe - Les Trois Saveurs (1 Derb Assehbe, Bab Doukkala) plays three cards in one (French, inventive Moroccan, Asian) in the riad-hotel of Baroness Fabrizia Ruspoli. 500-600 MAD per person, dining room and terrace by the pools and gardens. Musicians at a low volume, no show.

The Hivernage garden

Dar Rhizlane - Le Mimouna (rue Jnane El Harti) is the counterpoint to the big Hivernage tables - the district of loud bar-restaurants (Comptoir Darna, White Sands, Nouba). 1930 villa behind a wrought-iron gate, century-old garden with bougainvilleas, roses, lemon trees, bitter orange trees. Three-course menu 450 MAD, four-course 580 MAD, à la carte from 400 MAD per person. Options: veranda, private salon, shaded terrace or dinner by the pool under the bougainvilleas - the last of which makes the couple’s table, the veranda if the night is cool. Open 7 days a week from 7.30 to 11pm.

The Guéliz patio

La Trattoria di Giancarlo (179 rue Mohammed el Beqal) crosses fifty years at the same address in a 1974 Art Deco-inspired villa decorated by Bill Willis - the interior architect of Villa Oasis (YSL/Bergé residence). Central lit pool, palms rising up to a glass roof, Moroccan lanterns. Three options depending on the booking: green garden, indoor salon, or pool-patio (the table to look for, to ask explicitly when booking). Classic Italian cuisine, daily fresh pasta, 400-700 MAD per person. Open midday to 2am.

The Grand Café de la Poste fallback

The Grand Café de la Poste (corner of Mansour Eddahbi and Imam Malik, Guéliz), covered in our brunch guide, tips in the evening into a small-group dinner. The former 1925 post office (Studio KO decor, the architects of the YSL museum) turns on its dim lights, lays out white napkins and candles, plays jazz with Arabic inflections. A mezzanine with moucharabieh and leather poufs was designed for the diners’ privacy. The decor is more memorable than the cooking, but if you want the jazz-candles-white-napkins format without leaving Guéliz, book the mezzanine explicitly. Typical bill 400-600 MAD per person at dinner.

What we set aside, and why

Every address that follows is romantic in its base atmosphere, but sits in another format covered elsewhere.

Dar Yacout, Le Tanjia, Dar Zellij, Comptoir Darna, Le Salama are open dinner-shows: candles, dish procession, gnaoua musicians and belly dance for 400 to 700 MAD per person. The format is theatrical and dilutes the couple’s table between a hundred covers. They live in our dinner-show & fantasia activity sheet.

Café Arabe, El Fenn, Le Foundouk, La Sultana Odette, MÖ-MÖ are romantic rooftops covered in our rooftops guide. El Fenn Bar and MÖ-MÖ (270° view) are especially suited to a sunset drink for two.

Villa des Orangers, La Grande Table Marocaine, Sesamo, Le Tobsil are gastronomic palaces at 800 to 2,000 MAD per person, covered in our fine-dining guide.

Riad Adore, Riad Farnatchi, Peacock Pavilions offer intimate quality tables, but reserved for their hotel guests: impossible to recommend to a reader who sleeps elsewhere.

Bô-Zin (Ourika road) is romantic in the decor, festive in the format after 10.30pm (DJ, standing tables). Too hybrid to hold a couple’s dinner. Book it for an early evening before a club.

In practice: booking, choosing the table, ordering the day before

Booking. Essential for the six addresses. Riad Kniza asks for 24 hrs in advance for the fixed menu. Palais Lamrani is closed on Wednesdays. La Trattoria fills the pool side quickly at the weekend.

Choosing the table. The precise request changes everything: ‘a patio-side table’ at Al Baraka, ‘a pool-side table’ at Dar Rhizlane and La Trattoria, ‘the mezzanine’ at the Grand Café de la Poste, ‘a table close to the pool’ at La Maison Arabe. The couple’s tables are never the ones in the middle of the room - flag the intent when booking.

Alcohol. Riad Kniza, La Maison Arabe, Dar Rhizlane, La Trattoria and the Grand Café de la Poste have a wine list. Palais Lamrani and Al Baraka to confirm when booking (the medina riad-restaurants play differently by licence).

Hours. Palais Lamrani closed Wednesdays, service 12-2.30pm and 6.30-9.30pm. Dar Rhizlane 7.30-11pm, 7 days a week. Riad Kniza dinner only. Al Baraka and La Maison Arabe midday and evening. La Trattoria continuous service midday to 2am. Friday and Saturday fill early.

In high season (April-May, September-October, European school holidays, Valentine’s Day), double the booking margin everywhere, plan your outfit before setting off. A birthday or a proposal can be flagged when booking - Dar Rhizlane and Al Baraka are used to it, cake and flowers on request.
