Day trips from Marrakech
Marrakech is a launchpad: an hour to the mountains, three to the ocean, two days to the real desert. We've sorted these trips by real distance and by what they're worth once you're there. Here's how to pick yours - and what you'll be sold along the way that isn't worth the fare.

OUR PICK Agafay desert
The stone desert on Marrakech's doorstep
The day trips on the map
From the Atlas foothills to the ocean and the southern desert.Which day trip to pick?
We start from what you've got: time on hand, season, what you're after - not a fixed list. How much time have you got?
Half a day, and you're back for dinner in town: Agafay or Lake Lalla Takerkoust. A full day, dawn start: the Ourika, Ouzoud, Imlil or Essaouira. Two days or more: the real desert of Merzouga or Zagora.
Agafay, Zagora or Merzouga?
The Agafay plateau is a stony desert less than an hour away: fine, quiet, but it's stones, not the postcard dunes. For real dunes, Zagora needs two days, Merzouga and the erg Chebbi three. Anyone who sells you the Sahara at sunset and back for dinner is counting on your tired mind not to check the hours.
By yourself or on a tour?
The nearby valleys (Ourika, Imlil, Asni) can be reached by grand taxi and walked without a guide. The far desert, the Toubkal climb (guide mandatory) and packed one-day trips like Aït Ben Haddou run better as organised tours, transport included.

Our method
We sort by real distance, not by what sells
Every destination has its sheet: distance, drive time, duration, what's worth the detour and what disappoints. Bookings go through GetYourGuide - no extra cost to you, a commission for this guide, never at the cost of a skewed ranking.
