One day, one loop, morning to night. The souks, Jardin Majorelle, and back to Jemaa el-Fna at dark.
One day in Marrakech is the lot of stopovers and short weekends: the time to catch the medina’s pulse, not to see everything. The line here is to go fast but right - a dense loop, morning to night. We keep what nobody would want to miss: the square, the souks, a medersa, Jardin Majorelle, and back to Jemaa el-Fna when it catches fire.
Order counts. You open with the monuments at quiet hours, head to the gardens in early afternoon, and come back to close on the square at dusk - that is when it gives the most. The day is full, plan good shoes and water. Ideally followed March to May or September to October, when midday heat stays bearable.
The essentials, morning to night

The square before the vendors: water carriers, first terraces, the rare early-morning quiet. A coffee, then off to the Bahia.
Palais de la Bahia
Everyone wants to see it - let us be plain: the visit is short, often packed, and restoration scaffolding lingers in places. The grand courtyard and the harem apartments, painted cedar and zellige, earn the detour. The rest is patchier. At opening, before the groups. Entry around 70 dirhams (£6).
Souks and Ben Youssef Medersa
Up north via the dyers and blacksmiths souks. The medersa is the day's centrepiece: marble courtyard, basin, stucco lace and cedar. Reopened after restoration in 2022, it opens at 9am. Getting there before noon gives it to you nearly on your own. Entry around 50 dirhams (£4).
Lunch at Mouassine
A shaded table on the Mouassine side, time to catch your breath before stepping out of the walls.
Jardin Majorelle and YSL museum
Twenty-five to thirty-five minutes on foot via Bab Doukkala from Mouassine, or a short taxi (around 30-40 dirhams). The Majorelle blue, the bamboo, the basin. The Yves Saint Laurent museum next door (separate entry). Ticket booked online, per slot - seats go fast. Garden around 170 dirhams (£14).
The Koutoubia, from outside
On the way back to the square. The 12th-century minaret marks the whole town. The interior is kept for worship, you walk round it via the gardens at the hour when the stone turns pink.
Jemaa el-Fna at dusk
The moment we keep for the end. The square tips: the halqa - storytellers, gnaoua, acrobats - the stalls lighting up, the grill smoke rising.
Dinner at the stalls
You dine on the square, at a wooden table between two stalls: skewers, vegetables, bread. Simple, alive. Enough to close the day without looking further.
Worth knowing
- Flat shoes: the medina is paved and uneven.
- Keep cash: many places do not take card.
- Jardin Majorelle ticket to book online, per slot - it goes fast.
- In transit: most medina riads and left-luggage shops keep cases for the day.

How to adapt it
Flip it: Jemaa el-Fna at night from arrival, then the medina and gardens the next morning, before departure.
Keep Jemaa el-Fna, the souks and Ben Youssef Medersa, and close on a rooftop. Majorelle alone needs two hours, transfer included.
Spread the pace over two days: the southern medina, then the gardens, no rush. See our two-day itinerary.
Start at 8am, keep Majorelle and the indoor visits for the hot hours, and do not force the afternoon: the square is enough in the evening.
