Leather babouche workshop in Marrakech

This is the longest and most immersive of the craft workshops: four hours, in a small private group, with a master leather craftsman of the medina, to shape your own pair of babouches. You come in knowing nothing about leather, you leave in shoes made by your own hands.

From leather to shoe

The route follows that of the trade: you choose your leather - colour, suppleness - from the craftsman’s stock, transfer the pattern to your size, cut the pieces, then assemble sole and upper. The leather comes from the medina’s tanneries, at Bab Debbagh, where it is still tanned the old way. The workshop extends, in miniature, the work of the souk babouche-makers.

What the maâlem does, what you do

To be up front: you do not stitch the pair on your own from start to finish. The final stitching, the most delicate step, is handled by the master - that stitching is the difference between a babouche that holds and a bodge job. You do the bulk, he adds the expert’s hand. Far from a cheat, that is what guarantees you leave with a genuinely wearable pair. The workshops own this, and it is the right way to do it.

A half-day, a useful object

Four hours is a commitment - plan a half-day. But that is also what sets this workshop apart from shorter introductions: the time to grasp the trade, to mess up a little, to start over, and to leave not with a decorative object, but with a pair of shoes you will wear.

You come in empty-handed, you leave in your own shoes - hard to find a more concrete souvenir.
