In Ghmat, former Almoravid capital at the foot of the Atlas, Aghmat Lodge is a guesthouse set in the countryside, 25 km from Marrakech. Pisé and stone walls, solar power, well water, pool open onto the summits: you come here for the silence and the big landscape, not for the medina at hand.
Our verdict
Aghmat Lodge is not a Marrakech address, it is a country house next to Ghmat. The village, 25 km south-east of the city, looks like little today, and yet this was the Almoravid capital before Marrakech: you still visit the archaeological site of the former city and the mausoleum of the poet-king Al-Mutamid. The house is set apart, on the plain, where crops give way to the first Atlas foothills. No souk, no lanes: a garden, palms, a pool and the mountain as backdrop. It is an owned stance, that of calm and the big landscape rather than the medina’s buzz.
What sets the house apart is how it runs. The ecolodge works largely off-grid: solar power, on-site well, pisé, stone and wood construction in respect of Amazigh building. The whole stays simple and light, pale tadelakt, vaulted alcoves, four-poster beds lined up at the pool edge. On the relaxing side, an outdoor pool facing the summits, a spa with hammam, sauna and massages extra, and a large garden where horses and animals move freely. The kitchen is Moroccan, to book in advance, the evening meal is prepared on request: you are not in a hotel where you order at any hour, better to plan. With its single-storey family rooms, its small children’s pool and its play area, the house clearly aims at families and those wanting to sleep quietly, like other addresses turned to nature on the outskirts.
That leaves the trade-off of this isolation, and it weighs. Reckon 30 to 40 minutes by car to Jemaa el-Fna, and every outing has to be planned: no cruising taxi, no walk-to shop. The last kilometres of track are in poor state, which several travellers flag rightly - plan to drive slowly. For a first stay built around the medina and its monuments, it is a real drawback. Reviews praise the setting, the pool and the welcome most of all, on a solid volume (8.9 on Booking), even if a few more mixed returns on upkeep remind you that this is a country house, not a drilled resort. From around £72 a night depending on the season, Aghmat Lodge speaks to families and travellers who want the Atlas, open air and a concrete ecological approach - not the convenience of a city base.

Worth knowing
