Our verdict
The Dar Rhizlane clears up right away two classic frustrations of the medina: the lack of space and the noise. It is a palace guesthouse of Hivernage, laid out not around a tight patio but a real garden, planted with palms, bougainvilleas and cypress, where a heated pool stretches between sun loungers and banquettes. In the evening, candles are lit at the water’s edge and the place takes on the air of a private villa. Only around twenty rooms, in careful Moroccan decor, open onto this garden or terraces, which places the address in the human-scale 5-star bracket rather than the impersonal big hotel.
The house is set up so that you stay. There is a spa with hammam, rest room and treatments, a restaurant serving Moroccan and international cooking, often at the pool edge, and even cookery workshops for anyone who wants to bring home something other than souvenirs. The service, personal in a house this size, and the cleanliness come out top of the comments, on a review volume large enough to give the score weight. This is the logic of a house where you drop your bags for several days, even if it means only stepping out at cool hours.
The location is judged against what you want. Hivernage is a tree-lined residential quarter, laid out in the 1920s, west of the medina: quiet, open, safe, with theatres and great hotels, but without the lane life or the souks at the corner. You reach Jemaa el-Fna in a twenty-minute walk or a few minutes by taxi, and a car can drop you at the door, which no riad in a derb allows. It is an accepted trade-off: medina immersion swapped for space, green and calm.
What the Dar Rhizlane pulls off is bringing a garden, a pool and a spa together a few minutes from the centre, in a house that keeps its human scale in spite of the 5-star classification. The price and the remove from the medina are the entry ticket. In Hivernage, at this level of calm and comfort, the address is hard to catch out.
