Dar Sabra

Dar Sabra does not present itself as a hotel but as an art gallery you inhabit. The house takes two hectares of the Palmeraie, this belt of palms and olive trees north of Marrakech, about ten minutes from the medina. The architecture, massive and ochre, plays raw-earth volumes rather than Moroccan folklore. But what strikes first is the garden: more than sixty works are planted among the trunks, monumental sculptures, friezes and large pop frescoes in bold flat colours, a red arch thrown above the main pool. You cross the estate like a sculpture park, no guide or label, coming across a piece at a bend in a path.

The stay follows the same logic: here, no room looks like the next. The twenty-plus rooms and suites come in themes or inspiring countries, from the hanging bed to old twisted columns, always in pale tadelakt and open through wide windows onto the olive grove. You do not pick a standard category, you pick a specific room, and better look at the photos before booking - the gap between them is wide. On the relaxing side, three pools share the garden - the large ochre basin facing the house, the long mirror pool under the red arch, plus a heated indoor pool that saves winter - joined by a spa with hammam and massages, a gym and a tennis court. The table, Moroccan or international, is served at the water’s edge, under a Berber tent or in the room, and in the evening you do not really have a reason to step out. It is that stance, artistic and calm, that places Dar Sabra alongside other out-of-the-ordinary addresses where you sleep otherwise.

That leaves the Palmeraie trade-off, and it weighs. Ten minutes by car from Jemaa el-Fna, there is nothing on foot around: no souk, no neighbourhood café, every outing to town has to be planned by taxi or shuttle. For a first stay built around the medina and its lanes, this is a real drawback. The artist-home side has its flip too: some common spaces and rooms show their age, and the whole owns a strong decorative stance that will not please everyone. Travellers praise the welcome and cleanliness most of all (location stays the lowest score, at 8.8 on Booking), on a solid review count. From around £123 a night, and well beyond for the suites and the private villa, Dar Sabra aims at couples and art lovers after calm, space and a decor found nowhere else - not the convenience of a city-centre base.
