Our verdict
The Iberostar Waves Club Palmeraie is not a Marrakech hotel, it is a resort set in the Palmeraie, about fifteen minutes from town. You reach it by the Palmeraie road, north-east, where hotels spread out among palms and olive groves rather than lining the lanes. No souks at the door or derb to explore: a 10-hectare estate built around its pools, its gardens and a small lake, in low ochre-pink buildings. It is an owned stance. You come to settle in with the family, not to head out every morning.
The resort holds 318 rooms across two wings, all with a balcony or terrace opening onto the gardens. The rest follows the large all-inclusive club format: three outdoor pools, one heated October to March, a water park with slides and jets for children, five restaurants and two pool bars. The all-inclusive covers meals and drinks, and the establishment lines up what you expect of a family resort: kids’ club, games room, mini-golf, sports entertainment and evening shows. On the adult side, a spa with hammam and a fitness centre, extra. Travellers back it widely (8.7 on Booking, on nearly 1,300 reviews), with a special mention for the staff, rated 9.4. It is a logic shared by other family-focused addresses.
That leaves the distance, which decides everything. At 13 km from Jemaa el-Fna, you do not slip down for a medina round between two swims: each outing to town has to be planned, and goes through the free shuttle, which runs on fixed times. It is a brake for anyone coming first for the old town and its monuments. It is the whole point for the opposite: a settled holiday, big space for children, and a format where you do not reach for the card at every meal. Value for money stays the most measured score travellers leave, and Wi-Fi, rated 7.5, shows its limits away from the buildings. From around £149 a night depending on the season, you pay first for a family club format and the calm of all-inclusive, not a city-centre address.
