Al Maaden Villa Hotel & Spa
A villa and its private pool, at nightfall · © Al Maaden
The Al Maaden Villa Hotel runs on a simple idea: every unit is a stand-alone villa, each with its private pool, fireplace and kitchen. About forty contemporary medina-inspired villas, set on the Al Maaden golf course south of the city, between lawns and contemporary sculptures. A residential 5-star, with spa, ten minutes from town by car.
Our verdict
The Al Maaden Villa Hotel rests on a clean idea: the hotel room gives way to the whole villa. Each of the forty villas is a stand-alone unit, holding everything that makes a house, right down to the pool and the fireplace, in a contemporary architecture that nods to the medina, ochre and straight lines. The whole is set on the Al Maaden golf course, south of the city, in a planted park where you cross, here and there, contemporary sculptures.
That mix of private villa and resort makes its singularity. You enjoy your own pool and sitting room as in a rental, while having the spa with hammam, the two tables and the golf within reach. Art, present as far as the gardens and the waterside terrace, sets the tone of an address more creative than conventional. It is a format that goes to families and groups, who use the space of a whole house better than a hotel room.
Two things to know before booking. You are here in the middle of a golf course, off the centre. You only move by car, and the city takes about ten minutes to reach. On the villa side, next, the whole has a few years on the clock, and upkeep varies a touch from one to the other. You are in a reinvented medina, not the authenticity of an old riad. On the other hand, the welcome picks up the most unanimous praise from travellers, well ahead of the rest.
The Al Maaden Villa Hotel is the right call for anyone wanting the intimacy and space of a villa with private pool, with 5-star services and a touch of art, without the rates of the great palaces of the area. Families, groups of friends, couples after independence do well here, provided they accept the golf and the car. For a stay at home rather than at the hotel, on the outskirts of Marrakech, it is a format apart.
What sets it apart
- A whole villa, not a room Each unit is a stand-alone house: private pool, fireplace, kitchen, large volumes. You get the intimacy and space of a rental, with the services of a hotel behind.
- On the golf, between the sculptures The whole takes over the Al Maaden golf estate, south, in a park sown with contemporary sculptures. A spa with hammam and two tables round out an address more creative than expected.
- The space, for families and groups A whole house works better for a family or a group than a hotel room: kitchen to cook for yourself, several rooms, a garden of your own. Kids' meals available.
- On the outskirts, not the core A car is essential for every outing in town. The 'medina' style is a contemporary nod, not a real riad. A few villas show their age.
