Dariana

There is a line, on the Dariana site, we wish we read more often: if walking to the souks is essential to your trip, the house writes, a city-centre address will suit you better, and we prefer to say it plainly. A hotelier who turns down part of their own clientele, on their own site, is not common. It sets the tone, and it also says the essentials: you are nine kilometres from Jemaa el-Fna, on the Ourika road, and that is its lowest score: 7.9 out of 10 for location.

The house is a long single-storey white building, arcades in a line, set around an infinity pool. Around, gnarled olive trees, pale gravel, cactus and agave, white ceramic balls on the ground. Inside, the stance holds: a whole wall of leather poufs sorted by colour in white niches, like a display, tawny leather benches, beni ouarain rugs. It is clean, mineral, contemporary, far from the loaded riad. It is also far from the guest farm two hundred metres away on the same road.

Six rooms, from twenty-eight to forty-five square metres, king-size beds, soundproofed, and adults only. Breakfast is included for everyone, and the house specifies that it is whether you book directly or via a platform, which places it among the addresses where breakfast is not a separate line. The scores are excellent: 9.5 for cleanliness as for comfort, 9.7 for welcome. They rest, though, on thirty-eight reviews, and counts vary by page. That is too few to speak of an established trend. Take the score as an encouraging signal, not a guarantee.

Two serious blind spots, and they are not decorative. The first: we do not know whether you can dine here. The official site only sells breakfast and says nothing of an evening table, while platforms advertise a restaurant and room service. Nine kilometres from town, with no confirmed shuttle, the question is not a comfort detail. It is whether you will eat. Settle that point first. The rest of the fiche can wait.

The second is more delicate, and we prefer to write it. Clients describe a sense of unease in the immediate surroundings - insistent stares on the path, and one recounts nearly getting mugged. Clients also report the guard leaves around 10.30pm. None of this concerns the estate’s interior, which no one puts in question, and it is a small number of testimonies on a small number of reviews. But the information is too concrete to leave out: if you come here, plan your evening trips by car, do not count on reaching the main road on foot after dark, and ask the house how they handle late returns. The verdict, since that is what a guide is for. At £64 a night, breakfast included, for six careful rooms and no children, Dariana is a very good deal if you come as two, with a car, and if the house confirms you can dine there. Without a car, or if you plan to head out to the medina in the evening, move on. It is not a fallback, it is a choice.
