Our verdict
The Grand Plaza is first a matter of volume. One hundred and fourteen rooms lay out around a broad courtyard pool, ringed by the balcony wings of the building, two steps from the station and the Royal Theatre of Hivernage. Far from the intimate riad: here, space and kit come first, in a classic register travellers reward with a warm welcome and a solid score.
Its real specialty is room. Rooms are large and thought through to host a family. A games room busies the children, a spa with two hammams and a gym holds the adults. Around the pool, you lunch without going back to the room, and free parking settles the car question.
In return, the flip side of scale is known. Standardisation is the price to pay: the decor is clean and coherent, but with no surprise, and the environment of avenues and conference towers lacks the character of the old quarters. On the rate side, it is fair without being a bargain: you pay a touch more for the room and the facilities. Nothing bothering, provided you know what you come for.
The Grand Plaza speaks first to families and groups: space, a pool, full facilities and a measured price, two steps from the station, with enough to occupy young and old under one roof. For that precise brief, in Hivernage, it does better than most addresses of its size, and that is how to read it, as a convenient family base rather than a charm pause.
