An hour from Marrakech, hanging above the Azzaden valley, Kasbah Africa is an ecolodge turned to the mountain and the sky. Eight suites facing the summits, telescopes in the rooms, glass domes for sleeping under the stars: you come here for the High Atlas silence and the dark night, not to range out on the medina.

Our verdict

Kasbah Africa is not a Marrakech address, it is a mountain lodge you reach from Marrakech. Reckon a little over an hour by road south, through the Ouirgane valley, up to the Torort douar where the track climbs above the Azzaden riverbed. You are at the gate of the High Atlas, facing the Toubkal massif, in a nature reserve where pisé villages cling to the opposite slope. The kasbah, built in stone and earth, overlooks the valley from a terrace planted with olive and pomegranate trees. No souk, no neighbours: the mountain starts at the door, and the silence with it.

The place owns a single promise, and it holds it: nature and sky. The full name, “High Atlas Dark Sky & Nature Lodge”, says the angle. Each room comes with a telescope and binoculars, and far from the Marrakech lights the night loads up with stars as you rarely see. To push the idea further, the lodge offers Sky Domes, glass bubbles set on the terrace where you sleep with your gaze in the sky. The rest follows this plain stance: eight stone suites with a wood stove and a private patio, an infinity pool turned to the ridges, and the Resto Africa table, house Moroccan cooking served above the river, cookery classes on request. The Green Globe certification backs the approach, in a setting already leaning to walking days, mountain biking and stargazing. It is that mountain plainness that places Kasbah Africa alongside the addresses where you sleep otherwise, closest to nature.

That leaves the trade-off, and it is big: the distance. An hour and change from Jemaa el-Fna, this lodge does not combine with a city visits programme. You come here to withdraw into the Atlas, walk, read and watch the stars, not to go back and forth to the medina. The access road ends on a track, better to have a suited car or take the lodge shuttle. Comfort is that of a mountain lodge more than a smooth hotel: it is the right register for the project, but anyone after the service of a city-centre four-star will land off the mark. The Booking score, at 8.4 on a solid review volume, reflects that contract well: location and welcome pull up, value for money stays the most measured score. From around £102 a night for a suite, and more for a dome or the cottage, Kasbah Africa aims at mountain lovers, couples after calm and the curious about the sky - not at travellers in a hurry to get back to the Ouirgane or Marrakech lanes.

What sets it apart

  • A telescope in the room Each room comes with a telescope and binoculars: the stars for the night, the valley raptors for the day. Far from the city lights, the Azzaden sky reveals itself dense and clean.
  • Sleeping under a glass dome The Sky Domes, those transparent bubbles set on the terrace, let you see the sky from the bed. A night in the High Atlas open air, nothing between the stars and you, if you like the concept.
  • The pool facing the ridges An infinity pool turned to the Toubkal and the perched villages on the other slope. You swim with the mountain in your eyes, water cool even in high summer at this altitude.
  • The table above the river Resto Africa serves house Moroccan cooking on the terrace, at the edge of the Azzaden riverbed. Cookery classes on request, breakfast facing the valley, dinner without going back down to Ouirgane.
