About twenty kilometres from Marrakech, on the Ourika plain facing the Atlas, Les Asnouss is a nine-room ecolodge built in pisé. Earthen walls, solar power, well water, kitchen garden and a small farm of donkeys and peacocks: you come here for the country and the silence, not for the medina, which needs a car.

Our verdict

Les Asnouss is not a Marrakech address, it is a country house you reach from Marrakech. The estate sits in Ghmat, on the Ourika road, about twenty kilometres south-east of the city, where the plain opens and the Atlas takes up the horizon. Reckon thirty to forty minutes by car to the medina core. Around, no souk, no neighbourhood café: fields, a few earthen farms and the house garden. It is a clear stance, and it has to be accepted before booking, because it settles the whole stay.

The ecolodge holds nine rooms and suites, all built in pisé, that compacted raw-earth wall Berbers of the area have always used. The point is not just aesthetic: the earth regulates temperature, you are cool in summer and warm in winter without heavy air conditioning, and solar power tops up water drawn from a well. Each room opens onto a piece of private garden, with a bathroom, sitting corner and Wi-Fi. The rest of the estate follows the same back-to-essentials logic: an outdoor pool lined with olive trees, a kitchen garden feeding the kitchen, and a small farm where donkeys, ducks, rabbits, peacocks and ewes live. The guest table serves Moroccan and French cooking from the garden, smoothies and cocktails at the water’s edge, and since nothing is open around, you dine and stay in. It is that mix of country, table and real ecological approach that places Les Asnouss alongside other ecolodges around Marrakech.

That leaves the trade-off, and it is double. The remove first: without a car or shuttle, you are stuck, and every visit to town has to be planned like a half-day expedition. For a first trip built around Marrakech and its lanes, this is not the right base. Comfort next, simple and rustic, faithful to the place’s spirit but without the service or the facilities of a big hotel: no spa, no air conditioning everywhere, a human-scale address run like a home. Last point to keep in mind: the 9.9 score on Booking is superb, but rests on only thirty-three reviews. The signal is very positive and steady, statistically fragile still. Read it as the enthusiasm of a small group rather than an established ranking. From around £111 a night depending on the season, Les Asnouss aims at couples and families after nature, calm and a real eco approach at the door of Marrakech, not the convenience of a city base.

What sets it apart

  • A real earthen house The nine rooms are built in pisé, a wall of compacted raw earth as in Berber tradition. Practical result: cool in summer and warm in winter without pushing the air conditioning. Power comes from solar, water from a well.
  • The small farm Donkeys, ducks, rabbits, peacocks and ewes live on the estate. Children cross the garden to see them, collect an egg, follow a peacock. That is what makes the address truly family-friendly, more than a brochure line.
  • The guest table You eat what the house has prepared, Moroccan and French cooking, kitchen-garden vegetables, smoothies and cocktails at the water's edge. As there is nothing around, it is also the simplest solution for the evening.
  • The silence of the plain The pool opens onto olive trees and, in the distance, the Atlas summits. No traffic, no souk, no neighbours: you read, you swim, you do nothing. Exactly what the clientele comes to find.
