In the Ouirgane valley, an hour by road south of Marrakech, Ouirgane Ecolodge is a pisé guesthouse set at the foot of the Toubkal national park. Twelve rooms, an olive garden, a pool facing the mountains and a table drawn from the kitchen garden: you come here for walking, calm and altitude, not for the city.

Our verdict

Ouirgane Ecolodge is not a Marrakech hotel, it is a mountain house. You reach it in about an hour by road, sixty kilometres south of the city by the Taroudant road, where the plain gives way to the High Atlas foothills. The house sits at Douar Maghira, a hamlet in the Ouirgane valley, on the edge of the Toubkal national park. Built in pisé under the guidance of valley craftsmen, it takes the raw-earth and wood volumes of local building without slipping into set-dressing. Around, an olive garden runs down to the pool and a kitchen garden, and the Atlas takes up the whole horizon. It is an altitude-and-calm stance: you come here for what is outside, not for the city.

The house holds twelve rooms, from doubles to family suites with a balcony, panelled in pale wood and dressed with rugs, most open onto the mountain. The rest follows the same self-sufficient remote logic. The outdoor pool stays open year-round, joined by a thermal bath fed by a warm spring, a sauna and a hammam for cool evenings - altitude reminds you fast. The table serves house Moroccan cooking drawn from the garden and neighbouring farms, and in the evening you do not really have a choice anyway: no walk-to restaurant in the douar. The ecological approach is not just a label - solar panels, rain-water collection, feeding garden, jobs held by the valley. For the setting and the sobriety, the house plays in the same court as the other addresses betting on nature rather than urban comfort.

That leaves the distance, which decides everything. An hour from Jemaa el-Fna, you do not slip down for a medina round between two walks: this is not a base to visit Marrakech, it is a pause next to it. Anyone who dislikes the mountain road or evenings without an outing option will feel the isolation quickly. The house aims at walkers, families after space and travellers wanting the Atlas at wake-up rather than the souk - often on top of a few city nights. The review volume is solid and the score high, a mark of a welcome that holds over time. From around £77 a night depending on the season, it is also one of the most measured ways to sleep at the foot of the Toubkal, provided you accept the car and the remove.

What sets it apart

  • A pisé house built on site Raw-earth walls, wood frames, craft skills from the valley: the house borrows from Ouirgane building rather than folklore. Solar panels and rain-water collection round out the approach.
  • The pool facing the Toubkal Outdoor pool open year-round in an olive garden, with the Atlas summits as backdrop. A thermal bath, a sauna and a hammam take over when the altitude cools the air.
  • The kitchen-garden table House Moroccan cooking made with garden produce and from neighbouring farms. You dine on site, which lands right: there is no walk-to restaurant in the douar.
  • The trails from the door Walking, mountain biking, horse riding and 4x4 outings arranged from the house, in the Toubkal national park. The valley lends itself to walking from the gate, no transfer to a start point.
