Opened in 2022 in the Palmeraie, the Palais Mirage d'Atlas holds a handful of suites laid out around a long pool and a palm grove. You come for the spa, the calm and the space, 9 km from the medina. Comfort convinces, but location and value for money are up for debate. Here is who it fits, and who it does not.

Our verdict

The Palais Mirage d’Atlas is not a palace and is not in the Atlas: it is a fifteen-suite house opened in 2022 in the Palmeraie, north of Marrakech, 9 km from the medina. You reach it in about twenty minutes by taxi, where the city gives way to olive groves and palms. The address is accurate on what it offers: not a large resort or an exceptional table, but a long pool lined with palms, a watered garden, a spa and some spacious suites. The decor plays ochre tadelakt, dark wood and arched alcoves rather than the marble of the palaces. It is a calm bubble, off everything, and it is the stance.

The stay mostly plays out at the water’s edge and in the spa. The suites, from 55 to 85 m², mostly open onto the garden through a terrace or a balcony. Bedding and cleanliness are the points travellers praise most (9 and 8.9 on Booking). The spa, with its hammam, its twin treatment rooms and its sauna, is the real booking motive - residents only and billed separately. On the table side, one restaurant on site, Moroccan and international cooking, buffet breakfast included. This is not all-inclusive, you dine and get a massage extra. For calm and treatments, the address plays in the same class as the other town houses turned to the hammam, a notch below the great palaces on service and catering.

That leaves what pulls the score down, because 8.4 is fair but it is the lowest of this selection. Two concrete caveats come back. The location first: it is the weakest score travellers leave (7.9), and rightly - 9 km from the medina, with nothing on foot around, every outing goes through a taxi or the hotel’s paid shuttle. The pool next: the large one stays cold outside peak summer, only the small one is heated, which several clients flag with a cold shower to boot. Add sometimes slow service and value for money judged only fair (8.3), and the picture is clear. From around £109 a night, it is a good address for a couple or a family after calm, space and the spa in the Palmeraie, and who own the need to take a taxi for each city foray. For anyone wanting to sleep at the Marrakech core and step out on foot in the evening, this is not the right base.

What sets it apart

  • The spa and its hammam It is the strong point of the house, and the reason for most positive reviews: hammam, twin treatment rooms, massages, sauna. Residents only and billed separately.
  • A 25-metre pool A long basin lined with palms, sun loungers and parasols, little used given the small room count. Warning: only the small basin is heated, the large one stays cold outside peak summer.
  • Suites, not rooms The establishment only rents suites of 55 to 85 m², most with a terrace or balcony onto the garden. Space and calm, off the city buzz.
  • The Palmeraie's calm Palms, watered lawns, fountains: you are in a green bubble, off the city. The flip side of the setting is that you are 9 km from everything, taxi essential.

Worth knowing

Reckon 9 km and 15 to 25 minutes by taxi to the medina and Jemaa el-Fna. Each outing to town has to be planned. The hotel offers a shuttle (extra). On foot, nothing close by: olive groves, palms and villa walls. The first shop is several kilometres away. Free private parking on site. Buffet breakfast included (continental, halal, gluten-free on request). This is not all-inclusive, restaurant and spa are billed separately. Service sometimes slow, plan margin. Check-in from 3pm, check-out by noon. Entry price around £109 a night for the double room, more for the larger suites and in high season.
