In the Palmeraie, twenty-five minutes from the medina, the Palais Namaskar strings out 41 rooms, suites and villas along reflecting pools and water gardens, under a golden dome. You come for space, quiet and a top spa - not to head out into town at any hour.
Our verdict
The Palais Namaskar is not a Marrakech hotel, it is an estate set in the Palmeraie, twenty-five minutes from the old town. You reach it by the Bab Atlas road, where the city gives way to palms and olive groves, between the Jbilet hills and the Atlas horizon. Opened in 2012 and drawn around water, it lays out across five hectares a play of pools, mirror pools and canals linking the pavilions. The architecture mixes contemporary lines, Moorish arches and a golden dome that reflects in the great central pool - the image you leave with. It is a stance: you come here for space and quiet, not the medina at the door.
The estate holds 41 rooms, suites and villas, from the deluxe with a terrace to the large villas with private pool, enclosed garden and, at times, butler service. Most open onto the gardens or the water, in restrained tones and natural materials rather than folklore. The rest holds the same register: two restaurants, La Table and Le Namaskar, a lounge bar and a rooftop facing the countryside, and a spa built around the three axes of purity, energy and balance, with hammam, facials and massages. The main pool, long and lined with daybeds, extends the central water. For calm and treatments, the address plays in the same court as the other great houses in the area built around the hammam.
That leaves the distance, and the question of the current standing. Twenty-five minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, you do not slip down to the medina between appointments: each outing is planned, by car or shuttle. That is a deal-breaker for a short stay built around the old town, and it is the whole point for the opposite: a couple, a family after space, travellers who want a spa and gardens rather than the noise. The Palais Namaskar sat within the Oetker Collection until around 2017. It now runs independently, and traveller ratings are good without topping the class - 8.6 on Booking, with location and value for money as the lowest scores. In other words, you pay first for a setting, a quiet and an architecture, more than for palace-grade service without fault. From around £270 a night in low season, well above in summer and for villas, this is a retreat address, chosen knowingly.

Worth knowing
Reckon 25 minutes by car to the medina and Jemaa el-Fna, 30 from the airport: you will need car, taxi or hotel shuttle (surcharge) for each outing. Free private parking on site. Two restaurants, La Table and Le Namaskar, plus a rooftop bar. Spa and hammam by appointment. Free Wi-Fi. Pets welcome on request (possible fees). Check-in from 3pm, check-out by noon.
