South of Marrakech, on the Ourika road, the Pickalbatros Aqua Fun Club is a 4-star all-inclusive resort built around its water park: 58 slides, about fifteen basins, a kids' club. You book it for a family holiday, not for the medina.

Our verdict

The Pickalbatros Aqua Fun Club is not a Marrakech hotel, it is a water park with rooms around it. You reach it south of the city, on the Ourika road, where the housing tracts give way to olive groves and where the Atlas closes the horizon. The estate stretches across about ten hectares, laid out not around a patio but around a network of basins, rivers and coloured slides. Formerly Aqua Fun Club, then Be Live, the address is today run by the Pickalbatros group, which holds the same promise: a seaside stay without the sea, built for children.

The core of the resort is water. Fifty-eight slides across the park, about fifteen basins, big spirals for thrill seekers and softer tubes for teens, and a space set aside for the youngest with a castle, a lazy river and slides at their size. The rest follows the all-inclusive club logic: buffets at all three meals, snacks and drinks included, a kids’ club for 4-12s, daytime entertainers and evening shows. Rooms, plain and functional, open onto a terrace and the gardens. A spa with hammam rounds out the picture, extra. Travellers back it widely, with a score of 8.4 on Booking on nearly 4,900 reviews, and high mentions for staff and cleanliness. For the same turnkey holiday spirit, the address plays in the court of other all-inclusive resorts around town.

That leaves what you come for. All-inclusive has its flip side: mass catering turns to a repetitive buffet over a week, entertainment follows a standard format, and the setting, functional, does not look for the character of a riad. Most of all, you are far from everything: 20-30 minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, each medina foray has to be planned by shuttle or taxi, and many families end up not leaving the resort for the whole stay. That is precisely the point for anyone after it, and the wrong pick for anyone wanting to walk the souks. From around £102 a night full board, this is one of the most economical doorways to a family holiday in Marrakech, provided you own that you come for the park, not for the city.

What sets it apart

  • A real water park Fifty-eight slides and about fifteen basins across the estate, from big spirals to tubes for teens. Enough to occupy children several days without stepping out.
  • The children's basin A castle, a lazy river, child-height slides and little depth. Parents watch from a sun lounger while the youngest paddle safely.
  • All-inclusive, budget held Buffet meals, snacks, drinks and entertainment included in the price. For a family, it is the smoothed-out bill upfront, no maths at every lunch.
  • The kids' club and entertainment Kids' club from 4 to 12, daytime entertainers, evening shows. The seaside-resort format, set at the foot of the Atlas rather than by the sea.
