Marrakech by bike

Medina and city · classic or e-bike · ~3 hrs · guided
Price£19

The active, immersive way to take on Marrakech: a local guide, medina and monuments on the pedals (sometimes bike in hand through the souks). Classic bike - with the community-minded Pikala option - or e-bike for zero effort.

In Marrakech, the bike is not the first reflex - and that is exactly what makes the guided tour interesting. With a local guide, you link in three hours what would take a day on foot: the Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna, the Mellah, the edges of the souks and palaces, the new town and the loop of the ramparts.

Let us be honest on one point: you do not pedal non-stop through the souks. In the busiest alleys, shared with walkers, mopeds and carts, you get off and push - that is part of the deal. The real, steady pedalling is mostly on the new-town avenues and around the ramparts. Routes are laid to avoid the heaviest traffic.

Two schools. The classic bike, a moderate but real effort in heavy heat - the Pikala option, a social enterprise training young Moroccans and directly supported by booking there. Or the e-bike, which smooths out the hills and the tiredness: ideal to cover more ground without sweating, or in strong heat.

Either way, you leave in the morning ideally, helmet on and in a small group. And if you prefer nature to stone, the same idea exists in the palm grove or, for sporty riders, on MTB in the Atlas. And if the effort does not tempt you, the e-scooter covers the town without pedalling - a ride rather than an active tour.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really cycle through the medina?
Partly: you ride on many sections, but in the busiest alleys of the souks you get off and push. The steady pedalling is mostly in the new town, on the avenues and around the ramparts.
Classic bike or e-bike?
The classic (Pikala) calls for a moderate effort. The e-bike (EcoScooter) smooths the effort and the heat. Pick by your fitness and the season.
What is Pikala?
A social enterprise training young Moroccans for the bike and tourism trades. Booking a tour with them supports the training scheme directly.
How much does it cost?
From about £19 for the three-hour guided tour, up to £25 depending on the operator and what is included (entries, pastries, pickup).
Is it family-friendly?
Yes, routes avoid the heaviest traffic and the pace is easy. For younger riders or less sporty travellers, the e-bike is more comfortable.
When to go?
Mornings ideally, especially in summer: it is cooler and the traffic is lighter.
