MTB and e-bike in the Atlas

Imlil valley · full day · MTB or e-bike · sporty
Price£49

Real mountain biking: the tracks of the Imlil valley at the foot of Toubkal, full day. On a muscle MTB for strong legs (£49), or on an e-bike that smooths out the climb and opens the Atlas to less-trained riders (£82).

An hour and a half from Marrakech, the Imlil valley shifts worlds: 1,740 metres of altitude, Berber villages clinging to the slopes, walnut trees, a river, and at the back Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. This is mountain biking’s playground, for a day.

Two ways to take it on. On muscle MTB (£49), you have to swallow 800 to 1,200 metres of elevation on your legs alone, over 30 to 36 kilometres of tracks: a real sporty outing for those used to it. On e-bike (£82), the electric assist changes the climb and opens the Atlas to less-trained riders - the effort is still there, but the wall of elevation falls. Either way, transfer, mountain guide and Berber lunch are included.

Two honest caveats. On the MTB format, travellers mostly flag the transfers from Marrakech: build in some flexibility on the timing. And the weather calls the shots: spring and autumn are ideal, winter may add a snow-gear surcharge, summer midday is tough. To ride quieter, town and palm grove also run on the bike, without the elevation.

Good to know

What to bringSports kit, closed shoes, windbreaker (cooler at altitude), sun cream and sunglasses. Extra water.
MTB or e-bike?The muscle MTB (£49) means swallowing 800 to 1,200 m of elevation on your own legs: for those in shape. The e-bike (£82) opens the mountain to less-trained riders - the assist changes the climb, the effort is still there but manageable.
Level and seasonA sporty mountain outing, not a ride. Ideal in spring and autumn. In winter, snow may call for extra gear. In summer, the midday heat is tough.
TransfersOn the MTB format, transfers from Marrakech are the point travellers criticise most - build in some flexibility on the timing.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the outing happen?
In the Imlil valley, about 1 hr 30 (65 km) south of Marrakech, at the foot of Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak.
Classic MTB or e-bike?
The MTB means swallowing the elevation on your own legs (sporty). The e-bike, pricier, smooths out a good chunk of the effort and makes the Atlas accessible to less-trained riders.
Is it hard?
It is a real mountain outing: 800 to 1,200 m of elevation and 30 to 36 km. Sporty on MTB, more manageable on e-bike, but never a plain ride.
How much does it cost?
From £49 for the day on MTB, transfer and lunch included. Around £82 on e-bike.
Which season?
Spring and autumn are ideal. In winter, snow may call for extra gear. In summer, better to avoid the midday heat.
Is there a transfer?
Yes, return from Marrakech is included. On the MTB format, transfers are the point most criticised - build in some flexibility.
