Cycling in the Marrakech palm grove

Palm grove · ~2 hrs 30 · bike + local breakfast · guided
Price£25

The easy ride at its best: on the bike through the palm grove, at the pace of the tracks and the villages, with breakfast at a local home and workshop visits. More cultural than sporty, and all about slowing down.

Away from the medina horns, the palm grove lends itself to slowing down. This bike ride makes it a gentle morning: you ride the tracks between the palms, stop at the artisans’, and take the time for a proper Moroccan breakfast.

The route, led by a guide, passes through the gardens and the farms, and tells the story of the age-old irrigation - the khettaras that bring water from the Atlas down to the palms. You visit a zellige workshop, a communal bread oven, and share tea, juice and pastries at the host’s, with bread still warm.

A word on the setting: the palm grove is no longer the intact oasis of old, nibbled by villas and hotels. It is still a pleasant and change-of-scene setting for an easy ride. It is the opposite of the thrills version: if you are looking for adventure, the palm grove also runs on off-road e-scooter.

Good to know

What to bringLoose clothes, closed shoes, sun cream, hat. A bit of an appetite for the breakfast.
More cultural than sportyThis is not a sports outing: the pace is slow, the interest is in the encounters and the workshops as much as the riding. Perfect with family and for beginners.
The palm grove, without over-selling itThe palm grove is no longer an intact oasis: partly urbanised, it has lost nearly a third of its surface in twenty years. The setting is still pleasant, but it is not a wild reserve.
SeasonNice all year. In summer, this is a morning outing to avoid the heat.

Where to book this experience
